With every season Whittards brings out a new collection. With it being Halloween this week it seemed perfect to pop in and try their new offerings with a little tea tasting. Luckily for me they had their Orange Gingerbread herbal infusion on offer in hot ….

For this blend Whittards uses : Ginger, Cinnamon, Pumpkin, Apple, Brittle Pieces (sugar, hazelnut, invert sugar), Sweet Blackberry Leaves, Liquorice Root, Orange Peel, Almond, Sunflower Petals and Flavouring.

The aroma from the already brewed tea is sweet , fruity with a spicy nutty under tone.

What I like about today is the options to try it hot and cold as some teas taste completely different hot vs cold . After sipping on both I am quite surprised on how similar they actually are. The pumpkin and apple work together to provide the fruity main flavour of the tea. It’s not until the after sip that the ginger and nutty aspects appear.

Unlike the hot tea the intensity of the ginger is surprisingly more noticeable in the cold brew version.

I’m not 100% on the gingerbread aspect side of the tea as the cinnamon doesn’t come through enough for me to work with the ginger to provide the needed spiced notes I was hoping. However this doesn’t effect the overall autumny perfectness if this tea. It has the balance of fruit and spice just right but maybe needs a bit more of a punch !

De Oliveira Tea House was inspired by a man named Eugene de Oliveira. A beautiful, intelligent, creative and warm hearted man who lit up any room he was in.

Our family tragically lost Eugene on May 27th, 2019, a few weeks after his 27th birthday.

While we no longer have the blessing of having him around physically, we have the gift of his presence and his vision for the future.

Each tea we blend and package is full of love, devotion and hope.

We dreamt that through these teas, we could give our customers the same warm comfort Eugene gave us. We want to create a legacy he’d be proud to lend his name to.

Sweet As Apple Pie

For this blend De Oliveira Tea House only uses organic ingredients of the following: Rooibos, Honeybush, Apple Pieces, Cinnamon, Vanilla Pod Powder & Ginger.

On opening the tea pouch you are instantly engulfed with the sweets sea of the vanilla and fruity tones of the organic apple pieces . It’s almost hard to even distinguish the Rooibos and Honeybush aspect of the tea in its smell straight from the pouch.

Upon brewing the aroma of the tea completely changes to that of its dry state. It allows the Rooibos to really sing and allows the cinnamon and ginger to warm and develop as the flavours intensify.

As expected with a tea blend that contains Rooibos is a brewed liquid that has a brown redy tinge.

Let’s get sipping !

First sip hellloooooo Rooibos, which is first taste followed then by the after taste of the apple chunks. Despite its aroma the tea isn’t overly as sweet as I expected it to be. However I find that the tea being this way allows for the flavours of vanilla, ginger and cinnamon to naturally enhance their flavours and natural sweetness. Despite the Rooibos and Honeybush having what at times can be an “overpowering” flavour , this blend manages to allow the other ingredients to have turn not just separately but individually.

This blend is also pretty unique I’ve had plenty off apple teas and even more Rooibos teas but together nope ! It’s a new one for me and a lovely guilt free apple pie perfect for autumn weather and cosy nights in.

Puerh his a type of fermented tea from China, within Yunnan province. Fermented tea is tea that has undergone microbial fermentation from several to months to several years. For this Pureh tea b have sent me their :

Upon opening the tea pouch that the tea arrived in you are instantly engulfed with that distinct fermented aroma. It’s one of those kind of smells where you are really hoping that the tea doesn’t taste like it smells!

It’s. It isn’t the easiet to get the tea leaves separated from the brick or maybe I’ve just not found the magic trick of doing it !

The aroma whilst brewing , thankfully no longer smells like it’s dry state. It does still have a slight fermentedness to but nothing like the dry tea leaves.
As expected with what is known as a dark tea the brewed liquid is of a dark brown nearly black in.

Let’s get sipping!

Wow, first sip is nothing like what I expected it to be. Trust me this a very good thing. Pureh can have varying types of flavours. For me this one has a more earthy mellow flavour to it. Gone is the fermented aroma and what I expected it to taste like. It’s not overly sweet in its flavour but it doesn’t have the bitterness that some can have.

Further added to the sipping experience Pureh can quite often change its flavour during the cup allowing for combination of tastes. If anything for me the only change in its flavour was more that became slightly bitter further down the cup you drank.

Would I say I love this tea, I’m not so sure but in comparison to what I first smelt of the tea it’s a vast improvement. However I have been informed that with Puerh tea the taste of it changes depending on its age. So maybe in 6 months I’ll get a different taste.

For this tea blend Joes Tea Co uses : hibiscus, apple, spearmint, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, natural strawberry flavour and natural raspberry flavour.

Upon opening the tea pouch you are instantly engulfed with the fruity tones of the tea. It smells berrylicious and it certainly gets your mouth watering. The blueberryness is the most prominent smell of them all. An added touch that I love is upon opening the packaging it says

Whilst brewing the aroma of the tea doesn’t overly change, apart from it is now possible to smell the spearmint which in its dry state it wasn’t obviously noticeable.

The brewed liquid is a deep redy pink, very similar to that of the colouring used within the packaging which is either really clever or pure coincidence!

First sip is fruitylicious ! It’s strong and powerful in its flavour and it’s knows how to get your attention. Which is just what I’m after from a fruit tea. It’s not exactly possible to pin point an a exact fruity flavour other than naming it “berry” I always find the use of hibiscus in teas as adding a richness too it’s flavour quality.

It’s not until an almost after sip that the spearmint really sings. It’s quite a weird sensation Ito be honest with you. It’s like it almost keeps quiet while you enjoy the fruity notes and then wham here I am ! For a fool refreshing almost after thought. Like don’t leave me behind I’m here too you know ! Hehe however it just added to the overall sipping experience which for one I am enjoying.

I can also tell that this is the kind of tea that will be perfect served hot and cold, perfect for cooling down on a hot day or warming up on a cold one! It’s also a caffeine free blend so can be enjoyed at any time of the day.

What I love about connecting with tea companies from all around the world is trying new teas that you aren’t able to easily get hold of where I’m based in the UK. So I always look forward to receiving international teapost.

Tuo Tea

Thanks to Moylor I’m able to try for the first time Tuo Tea . This specific tea is from 2012 and is a High Quality Raw Puer Raw Tea Tuocha Puyu Qingtuo Tea. This tea is mainly produced in the Yunnan area. Tuo Tea can be divided into either green or black tea depending on what raw materials it’s made of. For the one I’m trying today is classed as a green one!

Tuo Tea can either come in lumps or bricks. As you can see from the photo this one is a lump. Unlike a brick it easier to transport. The tea looks similar to a thick-walled bowl with a whole in the middle.

Let’s get brewing !

Now I’m not going to lie but working out the best way to get the tea leaves apart was a bit of a challenge and maybe using knife isn’t the best option but needs must!

The aroma of the tea in its dried state is quite pungent. It’s strong and almost earthy. Like a deep richness that only comes with age.

The aroma whilst brewing isn’t too dissimilar to its try state it’s just not as intense. I can’t really think of an aroma comparison for this tea to you.

The brewed liquid is of an orangey brown in its colour.

First sip is interesting. I am very surprised and almost relieved that the tea doesn’t taste anything like it smells. However it still has an almost earthy edge to its taste. This is due to the way the tea has been manufactured and is a fermented tea, which is where the teas flavour and characteristics is formed. It has a deep richness and there’s all something nostalgic about sipping on a tea that’s 6 years old.

The sipping experience is light and refreshing as the tea has a natural sweetness to it which is surprising considering the earthy depth in flavour that the tea also has.

I think this tea is a grower , the more you try it the more I’ll like it !

Nisi – Camomile and Lavender

Nisi is a tea company based in Greece. They are a natural tea and herbs specialists. Focusing on the beneficial properties of Greek nature without any chemicals. Using the purity and potency of herbal healing. Nisi believes that sipping tea can be more than just a pleasure to sip on but also have many health benefits.

Today I’m sipping on two of their ingredients to make my own blend. Their Camomile and Lavender.

Their Camomile tea is grown in Greece and tends to have a more sweet and earthy taste to it compared to camomile grown in other countries. As its produced locally it allows Nisi to know that due to the nutrient rich grounds it’s grown in allows extra strength within the ingredients.
As I like to drink my camomile primarily in the evening Nisi suggested to add some lavender to the blend, which I’m going to give a try. Like the camomile its locally sourced/grown in highly, nutritious soil for the best yield.

In my infuser I firstly filled it with camomile, of which smelt super powerful in its flavour and I’m very much hoping it tastes that way too. I then popped it in the mug and filled it with water. I then added in two sprigs of lavender and left it for a few minutes to infuse.

While brewing the aroma intensified with the richness of the camomile and the lavender it was mixing together perfectly and was certainly getting the taste buds going.

After brewing I removed the lavender and the infuser and was left with a light yellow brewed liquid.

First sip and wowzer what a punch !

The camomile taste just shines through. Due to the naturalness of the dried camomile its flavour is very strong. It may even be the the strongest tasting camomile I’m yet to try. The flavour is so pure and rich it really is a taste sensation.

With the use of the two sprigs of lavender it provides a perfect side balance. It’s just enough to allow the lavender to add a delicate flavour to the sip so that it doesn’t over power the camomile. It works in harmony with up the camomile adding a further floral undertone.

Combined together the camomile and lavender just works. The richness and strength of the blend is just amazing and will knock your socks off. Yet it also has a pure smoothness which adds further pleasure to the sipping experiences which just exquisite. Wether this down to the pureness of the ingredients or some magical Greek goodness!

Which I find such a wonderful ethos as I’m sure many of you like me uses tea to benefit my wellbeing.

Rooibos & Rose

Each of ZO Teas tea blends is based upon a different aspect of our wellbeing and their Rooibos and Rose is for our Balance. It has been blended to realign the body’s natural levels, from reducing fatigue to relieving bloating. It also has skin cleansing properties and bone strengthening.

For this tea ZO Tea blends:

Upon opening the teach pouch the dried aroma is very distinctive with a Rooibos, if your a Rooibos drinker you will know exactly what I mean. There’s also the odd whiff rose and fennel.

Whilst brewing the aroma doesn’t change which is something that always pleases me with me a tea.

Like any Rooibos based tea the brewed liquid is a brown with a redy tinge.

First sip is just tealicious. On first sip the Rooibos is the main flavour. It’s not until more of on after taste that you start getting the Rose aspect of the tea blend. Another distinct flavour that strongly comes from through, is that of the cocoa nibs. It adds an almost earthy flavour tea to the brew but it also deepens the Rooibos flavouring.

If there’s one slight downside to the tea is the flavour of the Rose. For me it doesn’t come through strong enough. The floral delicateness it’s most certainly there and that adds a lightness to the sip but I love rose and would have liked it to come through just a bit stronger.

A further aspect of this tea that makes it even more of a pleasure to sip is the potential health benefits that it can bring to you from drinking it. Added benefits from drinking tea is always a good thing in my books.

Today I’m going to be trying there Roselle and Red Date.

The health benefits known for drinking this tea are:

Roselle: has diuretic property and detoxify the body, facilitate weight loss, smooth wrinkles and liver health.

Red Date: Nourish blood, improve digestive health and rehydrate skin.

As you can probably already guess the Ingredients for this Tea blend was a Roselle (Taiwan) and Red Date (South Korea).

Upon opening the tea pouch, the overall aroma is very light in its nature. It has a light floral tone with under notes of date.

With a recommendation of 8 minutes brewing get that kettle on.

The aroma whilst brewing has certainly intensified it smells berylicious it has a very Berry smell alongside that of the date.

The brewed aroma is a rich redy pink .

First sip is very intriguing. It packs a real punch with its flavour and intensity. The main flavour at the forefront is that of the date followed by that of a fruity and almost floral tones of the Roselle. Or as some you may be wondering Roselle is actually another name for hibiscus which explains the berry nature and colour to this tea. I sometimes forget that in other languages/translations it may be called a word that you don’t tend to use and your left wandering what it might be.

I’m not sure how I feel about the use of the date within the blend as it’s not something I’d normally chose to eat etc. However it some how just works amongst the flavours.

One thing I do know for sure is how amazing the colour of the brew is and it certainly helps when drinking this tea to keep in sipping! With the added known health benefits from the tea as well it’s a perfect added extra to the sipping experience.

With the flavour intensity of this tea and the colour it would also make the perfect iced blend. Machine drinking an ice cold bright pink tea on a hot summers day !

Really Rather Good Coffee House – Summer Tea

After a stroll around the beauTEAfully quaint Bury St.Edmunds it was time for a much needed cuppa!

Coming out of the cathedral grounds we stumbled across the Really Rather Good Coffee House ! Now with a business name like that it was well worth a go.

Don’t worry they serve tea as well as being a coffee house, phew!

With a menu of over 20 house chosen loose leaf teas I was more than surprised at the selection of teas on offer, considering its coffee house status. For my much needed afternoon pick me up I decided on trying their Summer Tea.

Summer Tea

For this blend the Really Rather Good Coffee House uses the following ingredients: black China tea, with natural apricot and strawberry flavours and cornflower and sunflower petals.

I love a flavoured black tea so I was very intrigued my this flavour combination. Upon opening the brewing tea leaves you are instantly engulfed with the fruity notes of the strawberries infusing with the floral tones of the cornflower and sunflower petals.

The brewed liquid is of a lift brown colour which you’d expect to see with a black based tea. It’s lighter shade of tone could be down to less black tea within the blend or extra fruit and floral aspects.

First sip is just beauTEAful !

I know I was desperate for a brew by this time but I think we are going to be on to a winner!

The tea is super light and refreshing! From a personal point of you I feel this tea is perfect without the need to add any milk. This doesn’t of course mean you can’t , as tea is unique and drank to how you like it

From this tea The strawberry flavour is very much in the forefront of the sipping taste. It has a slight peach Melba twang to it. With this being blended with apricot flavouring this could be a sign of why. What else I like about this tea is the floral depth. On first sip you are hit with fruity aspect of the flavours, but on second hit you get the floral side of the tea. Together

This tea like its name sake Summer Tea is just perfect with the warmer weather. Without the need to have milk it makes a refreshing afternoon tea. I’m also sure that with its flavouring it would make a lovely iced brew!

It also made a nice change to be given an extra jug of hot water , if you need it that is. Which was a really nice touch!
