As a belated birthday treat off of my mum I was treated to afternoon tea at The Assembly House in Norwich Norfolk. I absolutely love their afternoon teas and the setting is just amazing for it!

The afternoon tea is of a set menu but there are lots of choices of tea to choose from all of which are from a local tea company , Wilkinsons.

Every time I come here I like try at least 1 or 2 teas and always a different blend.

Today I’ve gone for the Peach blend. A China black tea with dried peach pieces.

You get a large pot of tea filled with loose leaf tea and a tea strainer to keep the bits in. The only downside of this way of having tea is that you don’t have control over the final strength as you aren’t able to remove the loose leaves. Which is fine for me as I love a strong tea.

As a black based tea with fruit flavouring, it’s brewed liquid of a brown colour. With its fruity aspect within the blend I will drink it black as I find flavoured black tea with milk a bit weird ! However that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t!

Firs sip is light and refreshing. With some fruit black teas it can be too dark and out shine the fruit flavour. With this tea its full of flavour and the peach out powers the black tea aspect of it making it tealicious. The other perk of this tea is that it’s a great pallet cleanser for all the aspects of an afternoon tea.

Thanks to the lovelies at De Oliveria Tea House for sending me some of their tea all the way from Australia to the UK for me to try. Today I’m sipping on their After Dinner Mint.

After Dinner Mint

For this Tea blend De Oliveria Tea House uses Organic Rooibos, Organic Spearmint and Organic Buchu Leaf.

Upon opening the tea pouch you are instantly engulfed with the minty notes of spearmint , with an almost sweet notes coming through from the buchu leaf. You arenโ€™t able to overly smell the rooibos within the blend.

The blend itself is very intriguing to look at , the buchu leaf is almost spiked like but the redy brown of the Rooibos adds an added colour splash to it.

Letโ€™s get brewing !

Whilst brewing the the aroma Of the tea changes to allow the spearmint to really sing. There other ingredients are no longer really noticeable within the smell.

I just love looking at the brewed leaves.

Like with most tea blends that have Rooibos within it the brewed tea liquid is that or brown with a redy tinge. However with the spearmint the brown has a more swampy green tinge to it.

First sip and hello mint !

I am a massive fan of the use of spearmint within a tea blend. It adds a less harsh minty tang but also a much added sweetness to the blend which you donโ€™t get with other types of mint. The tea has other added sweetness through the use of buchu leaf.

There is a slight tang to the after taste of this tea blend and because Iโ€™ve never tried a tea that has buchu leaf in I am presuming this is what Iโ€™m able to taste.

The only slight down side to this tea is that taste wise the roobois is not overly apparent. Itโ€™s not something are you able to easily detect within each sip. More of an every few sips it pops up and says hello! Which isn’t a bad thing as it allows the spearmint to do its thing.

However as the name suggest itโ€™s after dinner mint so mint and particularly the use of the spearmint is exactly what this tea blend brings to the cup !

Whittards – Nutcracker Tea

Time for Tea Please?

The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singling loud for all to hear! Or get pouring a massive pot of Tea. As most of my friends and family know I’m a bit of a tea but so what better way than to treat me is to buy me tea! After spending a festive weekend away with one of my besteas she surprised me with the gift of tea! A festive tea filled bauble of Whittards – Nutcracker Tea.

Although it’s a bit big for my tiny xmas tree, hehe.

Once popping opening the bauble tin inside you find a tea pouch filled with tea.

For this tea Whittards blends : Rooibos, Hazelnut Brittle (sugar, hazelnuts), Pecan Kernels, Walnuts, Flavourings, Grated Coconut, Cinnamon, Stevia Leaves. Doesn’t that just sounds tealicious. Even better that its caffeine free and their for the perfect Christmas tea to sip on before bed time.

As soon as you open the tea pouch you are instantly engulfed with the smells of a rich fruity toasted aroma. The depths of the smells coming from the tea is very intense. The hazelnut brittle packs a very sweet intensity to the blends underdone by the coconut an almost toasted side to the nuts. It’s only within further scrutiny that that you can detect the Rooibos but it’s very subtle.

The aromas whilst brewing doesn’t overly change from what it smells like in its dry state. It’s still rich sweet and toasty but the Roobois is still the hardest to detect.

The brewed liquid as expected with a tea blend that contains Rooibos is the distinct redy brown.

First sip is just tealicious !

I really am surprised by how nutty the tea really is! I know it’s called nutcracker but it really does fit it’s name. It’s rich sweet toasty. All the flavours work together just perfectly providing a hidden richness. It’s not until what I like to call the after taste the flavour of the Rooibos has its chance to shine. This isn’t a bad thing because it allows you to enjoy the rich nutty tones followed by the refreshingness and distinct Rooibos flavour. It’s almost like a mini pallet cleanser before the next nutty sip.

Now who doesn’t love a roasted , toasted nut at Christmas ? Not me and hopefully not you !

Pickwick – Strawberry Tea

One thing I love about going on my tea travels is finding lots of new teas to try and share in you !

So today we are sipping on Pickwick and their Strawberry Tea.

For this blend Pickwick uses Black tea, aromas and pieces of strawberry. Upon opening the tea pouch you are instantly engulfed with the strawberry aroma, it’s almost impossible to detect any black tea within the blend.

I love a flavoured black tea so I’m always very intrigued to try a new one.
Let’s get Brewing !
As soon as the hot water hits the tea bag the aroma of the black tea finally starts to shine through. It also allowed the strawberry tone to hot up.
Like with any black based tea the brewed liquid is of a dark brown colour . For me with any black based tea I drink it just like that black, without milk. This allows the real flavours for me to be able to shine through.

Let’s get sipping!

First sip is just beautiful! The strawberry flavour is super intense and actually sings louder than the black tea. Which is very rare for a black based tea. Especially one which I feel is potentially a supermarket blend. Not that it matters to me I love my tea where it comes from. It just makes a massive change for me to try a supermarket blend that tastes exactly like it says on the tin.

Unlike some black teas this blend is super light. The strawberry aspect of the tea lightens the black teas intensity and adds not just a sweetness to the blend but also the much needed mellowness tea. The strawberry flavour is also spot on and you cant mistake it for what it is. Which is just perfect.

Another thing that’s just perfect is how refreshing it is. It’s a delightful sip and the perfect afternoon pick me up tea. Perfect for an energy boost for exploring.

As some of you may know I’ve just been on my tea travels and been exploring the lovely city of Amsterdam and embracing all of its culture and sights, so a little detox is in order.

So here’s hoping that Framework Wellness Tea has created a detox tea that tastes amazing as well as receiving some much needed benefits !

Detox

For this blend Framework Wellness Tea uses: Rooibos , currants, orange peel, cornflowers, Acai and natural flavourings. All of which are organic ingredients.

Upon opening the tea pouch you are instantly hit with that familiar Rooibos flavour yet with underlying notes of fruity the floral aspects. It’s very intriguing smell wise so I hope it tastes this way too.

Whilst brewing the aroma of the rooibos intensifies and becomes even more prominent in its smell, I’m just hoping this doesn’t over shadow the other flavours within the blend when it comes to sipping.

Like any tea that contains Rooibos the brewed liquid is a redy shade of brown.

First sip is just tealicious . Some Rooibos teas tend to not always be that sweet but with the use of orange and currants and Acai. Iโ€™m actually fairly surprised about how much you can taste the Acai within the blend.

The flavour combinations itself almost tastes similar to that of grenadine syrup. Fruity and sweet.

Through the use of the cornflowers it just adds an extra flavour depth. It works perfectly alongside the fruity flavours and brings the flavour of Rooibos almost down a flavour level as within some blends it can over power a tea taste. However not with this one.

So if this is what a detox tea is then I’m all in, Amsterdam Detox here I come!

Afternoon Tea – The Assembly House

For my friends 30th Birthday we treated her to a surprise afternoon tea at The Assembly House, in Norwich! Like most of you tea lover we do love a spot of afternoon tea.

Even so when the sweet treats were themed to the seasons.

Other than the sweet treats, sandwiches , scones and hot appetisers choosing the perfect tea to coincide was essential. After consulting the tea menu….

I settled on Lavender Black.

Let’s get brewing !
Upon receiving the teapot you can self brew, the tea is loose within the tea pot and then you have your tea strainer to catch the loose leaf as you pour.

Taking the lid of the tea pot to smell the aroma you can instantly tell why it’s got it’s name as the lavender is very much doing the talking over the black tea.

As you can see like with any black based tea the brewed liquid is that of a dark brown colour.

First sip is just tealicious. The use of the Lavender is just perfect! The floral side to the brew just adds an added depth and intrigue to a normal black tea. I’ve had lavender in more herbal style teas but it’s almost like it pushes the taste boundaries working alongside each other. There’s just something about it that just works.

Drinking this tea black, to me makes it work perfectly with all the different flavour combination that the afternoon tea has. The lavender works like a pallet cleanser allow not just a refreshing sip but also allowing the food to be enjoyed without the tea being over powering.

It makes the sipping experience even more teatastic because the lavender is also grown and dried in Norfolk where I am so it’s just that little bit more special.

Joes Tea Co – The Earl of Grey

An afternoon tea sipping session is one of my major loves. Today I’m sipping on Joes Tea Co and their The Earl of Grey. If I could only drink one blend of tea for the east if my life earl grey would be the one so here’s hoping its a good one !

The Earl of Grey

For this septic blend of Earl Grey , Joes Tea Co uses Ceylon Black Tea and Bergamot Oil. It’s obvious from opening the tea ouch and by its aroma that there is plenty of bergamot within this blend yey!

Let’s get Brewing !

Whilst brewing the aroma of the blend doesn’t overly change the brewed ceylon becomes deeper and the aromatics of the bergamot sing further.

As expected with a black based tea the brewed liquid is of a dark brown colour.

Let’s get sipping !

First sip is just tealicious. I always chose to drink earl grey teas black as I feel milk just takes something away from the blend. This can occasionally lead to a slight bitterness from the brew but that is not the case with this blend. The balance of the ceylon tea with the bergamot is just spot on. They are blended perfectly for them to be sipped in unison as a match made in heaven. The citrus of the bergamot is sharp and punch but with the Ceylon is mellowed to perfection. I could happy sit and sip this all afternoon long.

Whittards – Orange Gingerbread

With every season Whittards brings out a new collection. With it being Halloween this week it seemed perfect to pop in and try their new offerings with a little tea tasting. Luckily for me they had their Orange Gingerbread herbal infusion on offer in hot ….

For this blend Whittards uses : Ginger, Cinnamon, Pumpkin, Apple, Brittle Pieces (sugar, hazelnut, invert sugar), Sweet Blackberry Leaves, Liquorice Root, Orange Peel, Almond, Sunflower Petals and Flavouring.

The aroma from the already brewed tea is sweet , fruity with a spicy nutty under tone.

What I like about today is the options to try it hot and cold as some teas taste completely different hot vs cold . After sipping on both I am quite surprised on how similar they actually are. The pumpkin and apple work together to provide the fruity main flavour of the tea. It’s not until the after sip that the ginger and nutty aspects appear.

Unlike the hot tea the intensity of the ginger is surprisingly more noticeable in the cold brew version.

I’m not 100% on the gingerbread aspect side of the tea as the cinnamon doesn’t come through enough for me to work with the ginger to provide the needed spiced notes I was hoping. However this doesn’t effect the overall autumny perfectness if this tea. It has the balance of fruit and spice just right but maybe needs a bit more of a punch !

Slenderize

The idea behind Slenderize as a tea blend is to boost metabolism and minimize cravings to help thin your frame.

For this blend Framework Wellness Tea uses the following ingredients : Organic Pu-erh Tea, Organic Cacao Nibs, Organic Orange Fruit, Organic Fennel Seed, Organic Ginseng Root, Organic Orange Peel, Natural OC Flavouring.

Upon opening the tea pouch you are instantly engulfed with the aroma of the fennel seed. I’m not always a fan of teas with fennel in as it can be an over powering flavour. On further sniffing the earthy pu-erh notes and the sweet fruity tones start to come through, which I’m hoping will intensify when brewing.

Let’s get brewing!

Whilst brewing the aroma of the tea completely changes from that of when you first open the pouch . The Pu-erh side of the tea certainly intensifies and provides an almost earthy aroma when combined with the cacao nibs. I’m only picking up a light hint of the Orange peel but will we be able to taste it.

I’m not too surprised with the brewed liquid being a browny tone from the
Pu-Erh within the blend.

First sip is very inTEAresting ! It is not what I was expecting at all based on its aroma in both its dry state and while it was brewing. To me the main body of the sip is a very peasant combination of the pu-reh and cacao providing the intensity and earthiness to the tea which is instantly uplifted by the refreshing whack of orange. Which until the sipping process the Orange side of the tea has been fairly dormant but it just takes this tea to the next level.

I was slightly concerned with the intensity of the fennel seed in the aroma stakes that it would completely engulf this tea however it’s very much an after thought in the flavour stakes. The use of the ginseng root too is only really apparent at the end of the sip when mixed with fruity orangeness provides a much needed but subtle warming kick.
